Getting started

Use the command palette

The command palette is a search box you can open from any page while you are signed in. Use it to jump to a page or a matter, find a help article, or hand a question or a task to the assistant.

Open the palette and search

  1. Press Cmd+K on macOS or Ctrl+K on Windows. The palette opens over the page you are on, even if your cursor is in a text field.
  2. Type what you are looking for. Results include pages such as Matters and your settings pages, the matters in your current workspace, and help articles.
  3. Use the arrow keys to move through the results and press Enter to open one.

Press Esc to close the palette.

Workspace settings pages show up only if your role can open them. For example, Audit Log appears for owners only. See Workspace roles and permissions.

Ask the assistant

When you type something, the first result offers to ask the assistant. Press Tab, or Cmd+Enter on macOS or Ctrl+Enter on Windows, to send your text to the assistant. Each question you ask from the search box starts a new conversation. On a phone or tablet, select the Search or ask button in the header instead.

The assistant can:

  • Answer questions about using Estate Bookkeeper. It draws on these help articles and on published Resources and Blog articles, and it links to the articles it used.
  • Look up your matters and their accounts and transactions.
  • Create a matter, with an account template if you name one.
  • Update a matter's details, including closing or reopening it.
  • Add asset, liability, income, and expense accounts to a matter.
  • Record transactions.
  • Take you to a page in the app.

Try requests such as "how do I record an opening balance" or "create a matter for the Estate of John Doe".

Confirm every change

The assistant does not change data on its own. Before it creates or updates anything, it shows a confirmation card that lists every field it will write. Nothing is saved until you confirm. If you decline, nothing changes.

When you ask for several separate changes at once, such as three new accounts for one matter, they appear together on one card and you confirm them together. They run in the order shown. If one fails, the rest are not run, and the assistant tells you which one failed and why.

If you type a new message instead of answering a card, the proposed changes are dropped and never run.

The assistant cannot delete matters, accounts, or transactions. Do that in the app yourself.

The assistant also stays out of sign-in and security. It can't change your password, email address, or profile, and it can't invite, remove, or change the role of workspace members. It won't open those pages either. Use Account Settings from your profile picture for your own account, and Workspace Settings, then Members, for team access.

Your conversations

Conversations are saved to your account, so you can close the palette, reload the page, or come back later. Open the palette with the search box empty to see Continue the conversation and your recent conversations in this workspace. A conversation that shows Waiting for you has changes that still need your answer.

Only you can see your conversations. Your teammates cannot, even in the same workspace. To remove one, open it and select the trash button, then select Delete? to confirm. Conversations you haven't used for 90 days are deleted automatically. Select New chat to start over.

What the assistant can see

The assistant acts as you. It can read and change only what your role in the current workspace allows, and the same permission checks run as when you click through the app yourself. It is only offered the actions your role can take. It cannot reach other workspaces.
